Transflective LCD display  has a pieces of transflective  plate on the bottom polarizer, which is the 

transflective poliarizer have both reflecting and transmitting property,which some part of ambient light can be 

transmitted through this LCD display, so it can be viewed in welllit environment and combined with a backlight in poor light conditions.

So transflective LCD display require a backlight.
